If your release has already been approved (finalized), genre changes are limited. In most cases, genre updates are not supported across all platforms after approval.
Quick answer
After approval:
Genre changes are only supported for Apple Music/iTunes
Genre updates are not supported across all platforms
FastForward is not required for Apple Music/iTunes genre updates
If the system won’t let you edit your genre, it usually means your release has already been finalized.
Why is my genre locked?
When your release is approved, your metadata enters the delivery process and is prepared for distribution to streaming platforms. Most platforms treat genre as fixed once the release is finalized. CD Baby cannot update genre across all platforms after approval.
When can I change my genre?
Apple Music / iTunes only
Genre updates are supported only for Apple Music and iTunes after approval. This change:
Does not require FastForward
Applies only to Apple Music/iTunes
Does not update genre on other platforms
If you need to request a genre update for Apple Music/iTunes, contact Support.
Can I change genre on Spotify or other platforms?
No. Genre changes are not supported for Spotify or most other streaming platforms after approval. If you need a different genre reflected across all platforms, your option is to:
Cancel distribution (See: How do I cancel a release?)
Submit a new release with the correct genre selected
What if my release is approved but not delivered yet?
There may be a delay between approval and delivery, but once your release is approved (finalized), genre edits are already restricted. You do not need to wait until it shows as “Delivered” for the genre field to become locked.
