CD Baby treats a one-track release as a single and a release with two or more tracks as an album. Partner services may use different track-count and duration thresholds.
Spotify categories
Spotify generally classifies a release with up to three tracks and a total duration under 30 minutes as a single. An EP generally has four to six tracks and is under 30 minutes. A release with seven or more tracks, or a total duration over 30 minutes, may be classified as an album.
Spotify may classify a release as Various Artists when it has four or more primary artists.
Apple Music categories
Apple Music applies its own rules based on track count and duration. A release may be considered an EP when it has one to three tracks and a short total duration, or four to six tracks within the service’s duration limit. Other releases may be classified as albums.
The services can update their classification rules. Check the service’s current artist guidance if a particular displayed category matters to your release.
