Your agreement with CD Baby is non-exclusive, which means you’re free to work with other distributors. However, digital music platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon only allow one distributor to deliver a specific release to their store. If the same album is sent to a platform by two different distributors, the platform won’t know which one to pay. To avoid confusion, they often remove the album entirely until the issue is resolved.
This is similar to how physical distribution works—stores don’t accept the same product from multiple suppliers. It’s not about limiting your freedom as an artist, but about ensuring your music is properly managed and paid for.
When should I use multiple distributors?
If another distributor offers access to a platform that CD Baby doesn’t currently deliver to, it’s perfectly fine to use that distributor for that specific partner. You can then use CD Baby to distribute your release to all other platforms. Just make sure your album isn’t being sent to the same store by more than one distributor.
Things to note
- Avoid sending the same release to the same platform through multiple distributors.
- If your album is removed due to duplicate delivery, you’ll need to choose one distributor to continue servicing that release.
