You can stop CD Baby from collecting royalties on your behalf at SoundExchange by claiming the SRCO (Sound Recording Copyright Owner) share yourself via a SoundExchange Direct (SXDirect) account. This effectively overrides our claim and transfers collection control to you.
How to switch your claim to yourself via SXDirect
- Register with SoundExchange as both a Performer and SRCO if you haven’t already.
- Sign up for an SXDirect account.
- Search for your recordings and claim them within SXDirect.
- When you claim the SRCO share, you override CD Baby’s existing claim.
- This may create an overlap (two entities claiming for the same dates).
- Don’t worry — CD Baby automatically releases its claim if you assert SRCO rights.
- Such overlaps typically resolve within 90 days.
- After resolution, only your claim remains.
- Recordings claimed by CD Baby will show a claim from “Audio & Video Labs, Inc.”
What about “claiming from inception?"
- Choosing to claim your SRCO share from inception (i.e. retroactively from the start) can cause previously paid amounts via CD Baby to be reversed.
- This may result in a negative balance in your CD Baby account.
- For this reason, CD Baby doesn't recommend claiming from inception.
- Instead, claim from the current date forward to avoid financial reversals.
Things to note
- If you don’t claim your SRCO share, CD Baby will continue collecting and paying SoundExchange revenue through your CD Baby account.
- Links to SoundExchange and their SXDirect services are for your reference; CD Baby does not control those third-party sites.
- The automatic release of CD Baby’s claim upon your SRCO claim helps simplify transition.
- Overlaps (when multiple claims exist) are expected and resolved by SoundExchange policies.
