When another artist records and releases a cover of your song, you may be owed royalties as the songwriter. How you collect those royalties depends on whether you are working with a performing rights organization (PRO) in your country.
What royalties you should expect to receive
- When someone records and sells a cover of your song, you are owed streaming and sales royalties based on that usage.
- If you are a songwriter registered with a PRO in your country, they will collect and pay you performance royalties for cover versions played on radio, TV, live performances, and digital platforms.
- If you control your own publishing (or have a publisher), you may also be owed mechanical royalties. These are typically generated when your composition is reproduced, such as through sales or streams.
