If you're working on a legacy CD Baby Pro Publishing release that hasn't been distributed yet, you can still add or edit songwriter and publisher information directly from your account.
This article explains how to do that, and what your options are if the release has already been distributed.
Editing songwriters before distribution
If your legacy Pro Publishing release is still in setup:
-
- Log in to your CD Baby account and go to your Albums & Singles.
- Click "View/Edit" next to your release.
- Scroll to "Tracks & Audio" and click on the first track.
- In the Songwriter Information section, you can:
- Add a new songwriter to your Songwriter Bank
- Edit an existing songwriter (if not locked)
- Assign songwriters to tracks
- Remove songwriters from tracks
For each songwriter, you’ll need to enter:
-
- Full legal name (not a stage or band name)
- Country of residence
- PRO affiliation (if applicable)
- Collecting or non-collecting status
- Contribution type (music, lyrics, or both)
- Percentage ownership
- Publisher information
If all songwriter details are the same across tracks, you can select the "Apply this information to all tracks" option.
After distribution: limitations and alternatives
- If your legacy Pro Publishing release has already been distributed, you won’t be able to edit songwriter or publisher information.
- Due to the complexity of publishing administration, CD Baby cannot process these changes post-distribution.
- In many cases, it’s faster to cancel your CD Baby Pro Publishing service and register or update your works directly with your Performance Rights Organization (PRO). This avoids delays that can take up to two years through large-scale publishers.
To cancel your legacy Pro Publishing service:
- Submit a request, and select "Cancel my CD Baby Pro Administration Service."
- Canceling Pro Publishing does not affect your digital distribution.
Things to note
- The CD Baby Pro Publishing service was discontinued on August 8, 2023. Releases signed up before that date are considered legacy Pro releases.
- Locked songwriter profiles cannot be edited if they’ve been used on a distributed release.
- Accurate songwriter and publisher information is essential for royalty collection.
