You might want to change your music distributor—for example, moving from another service to CD Baby so you can manage everything in one place. This article explains how to make the switch, what to keep the same, and what to watch out for.
How to switch distribution to CD Baby
- Create your single, EP, or album in CD Baby and submit it for distribution.
- Use exactly the same metadata as before (artist name(s), song/album titles, ISRC codes, UPC, etc.).
- After your release is live on streaming platforms, contact your previous distributor and ask them to remove the release from their distribution channels.
- Use the coupon code SWITCH50SONG (for singles) or SWITCH50ALBUM (for albums) to get 50% off standard distribution pricing.
What happens to play counts, playlists & other data
- If you keep metadata identical, there shouldn’t be a change in play counts or playlist inclusion.
- However, CD Baby can’t guarantee all partners will carry over counts, reviews, or playlist placements.
- If a platform (like Spotify) removed your content previously, delivery might fail—even if the switch is otherwise done correctly.
Things to note
- Switching doesn’t guarantee success in all cases—some platforms may reject content they’ve removed earlier.
- Always make sure audio files and metadata are exact matches to maximize the chance of preserving stream history.
- If your content was removed for “artificial streaming” or policy violations, CD Baby cannot appeal on your behalf.
- If you still have questions or run into issues, reach out via CD Baby’s Support / Submit a request.
