This guide explains the different Spotify earning types that may appear in your CD Baby sales reports and why some entries may show $0.00 earnings.
What do Spotify entries in my CD Baby sales report mean?
Spotify reports different types of activity and adjustments to CD Baby. Each entry includes an Earning Type that describes why the activity appears in your report.
Some earning types represent royalties from streams, while others represent reporting classifications, marketing programs, or platform fees.
To understand a specific line item in your report, check the Earning Type column.
What does “Stream” mean in a Spotify sales report?
A Stream represents a legitimate play of your track that qualifies for royalty payment. Spotify counts a stream when a listener plays a track long enough to meet Spotify’s streaming requirements.
Streams may earn royalties unless the content falls into categories that Spotify treats differently, such as noise content. Noise content includes recordings such as:
- White noise
- Nature sounds
- Ambient sound recordings
- Machine noise or similar non-musical audio
Noise tracks longer than two minutes can still generate revenue, but the payout rate may be lower than standard music streams.
What is the Spotify Discovery Mode marketing fee?
If you choose to participate in Spotify Discovery Mode, you may see a Discovery Mode Marketing Fee in your report.
Discovery Mode is a Spotify promotional program designed to increase algorithmic exposure for selected tracks.
Instead of charging an upfront fee, Spotify applies a marketing adjustment to royalties earned from streams generated through Discovery Mode. This appears as a marketing fee in your CD Baby sales report.
What are “Artificial Streams” in a Spotify report?
Artificial Streams are plays that Spotify determines were not generated by genuine listener activity.
Examples include:
- Streams created by bots
- Automated streaming scripts
- Manipulated or fraudulent listening behavior
These entries appear in your report for transparency but will show $0.00 earnings. Before April 2024, artificial streams were not labeled separately and instead appeared as streams with zero earnings.
What are “Ineligible Streams”?
Ineligible Streams are streams that appear in your report but do not qualify for royalties. These entries typically show $0.00 earnings. Common reasons include:
Noise content shorter than two minutes
- Spotify requires noise content (such as white noise or ambient recordings) to be at least two minutes long to qualify for monetization.
- If the track is shorter than two minutes, streams may still appear in reports but will not generate revenue.
Tracks below Spotify’s monetization threshold
- Spotify requires tracks to reach at least 1,000 streams before they become eligible for monetization.
- Streams from tracks below this threshold will appear as ineligible streams. Read more here.
What is Spotify Ad Studio in a sales report?
Spotify Ad Studio refers to advertising campaigns that use licensed music. If your music is used in a Spotify ad campaign:
- The earning type will appear as Spotify Ad Studio
- Payments depend on how frequently the ad runs
- Earnings may appear differently from standard streaming royalties
What is Spotify Sync Marketing?
Spotify Sync Marketing refers to licensing agreements where Spotify uses your music in marketing campaigns.
Key details:
- Spotify secures permission to use your track in promotional content.
- Payment is typically a one-time upfront fee.
- You are paid even if the track is not ultimately used in the campaign.
This differs from Ad Studio, where payments depend on ad usage.
What is the Spotify Artificial Streaming Fee?
Spotify may apply a platform penalty fee when artificial streaming activity is detected. This appears in your CD Baby report as Spotify Artificial Streaming Fee.
Important details:
- It is a flat fee charged by Spotify.
- It is not a reversal of previously earned royalties.
- CD Baby passes the fee through to the account associated with the affected content.
Why do some Spotify entries show $0.00 earnings?
You may see Spotify entries with $0.00 earnings for several reasons. The most common include:
- Artificial streams identified by Spotify
- Streams that do not meet Spotify’s monetization requirements
- Noise content shorter than two minutes
- Tracks that have not yet reached the 1,000 stream monetization threshold
Check the Earning Type column in your sales report to understand the reason for the zero-dollar entry.
